Anosognosia is a brain‑based condition where a person cannot recognize that they have an illness, often seen in schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, dementia, and after stroke.
This “lack of insight” is different from denial and is one of the main reasons some people stop treatment or refuse help.

Causes of Anosognosia :

Anosognosia usually results from changes or damage in brain areas that update self‑image, especially the frontal and parietal regions in the right hemisphere. Because these circuits cannot integrate new information, the person’s mind cannot register that thoughts, mood, or functioning have changed, so they sincerely believe they are well.In mental illnesses like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, this impaired self‑awareness is extremely common—studies suggest around half or more of people with these conditions show significant lack of insight, which worsens prognosis if untreated.
